OVERVIEW

Spanning more than 26,000 acres of rugged wilderness, Groton State Forest is one of Vermont’s largest and most spectacular outdoor recreation areas. Located in central Vermont near the town of Plainfield, this expansive forest is a haven for hikers, campers, paddlers, and wildlife lovers.

Home to seven state parks, including popular spots like Ricker Pond, Big Deer, and Stillwater, Groton State Forest offers diverse landscapes — from mountain ridges and deep forests to pristine lakes and tranquil bogs. With its extensive network of trails, crystal-clear waters, and multiple campgrounds, it’s a top destination for both peaceful retreats and action-packed adventures.

THE CAMPGROUNDS

Groton State Forest is home to multiple campgrounds, each offering a unique outdoor experience. From lakeside tent sites to lean-tos and cozy cabins, campers can choose their perfect basecamp. Some of the most popular campgrounds include:

  • Ricker Pond State Park – Great for paddlers and families, with lakeside camping and boat access.
  • Big Deer State Park – A quiet, wooded campground close to hiking trails.
  • Stillwater State Park – Offers stunning lake views, boat rentals, and shaded campsites.
  • New Discovery State Park – Includes a horse camping area and access to some of the forest’s best trails.

All sites are well-maintained and provide easy access to restrooms, picnic areas, and swimming areas. Many campgrounds are pet-friendly and offer direct access to trailheads and lakes for kayaking, fishing, and canoeing.

Winter access for non-motorized use (hiking, snowshoeing, skiing) is available in many areas outside the camping season.
