OVERVIEW

Tucked into the foothills of the Green Mountains, Hapgood Pond Campground offers a peaceful and scenic escape in southern Vermont’s wilderness. Centered around a spring-fed pond and surrounded by the Green Mountain National Forest, this small but well-loved campground is perfect for families, solo campers, and outdoor adventurers looking to reconnect with nature.

With its quiet atmosphere, waterfront views, and easy access to hiking trails, Hapgood Pond is one of Vermont’s hidden gems — offering a blend of forest camping and relaxing recreation.

THE CAMPGROUND

Hapgood Pond Campground is a U.S. Forest Service-managed site featuring both tent and small RV-friendly campsites nestled among tall pines and hardwoods. The campground is clean, quiet, and designed for campers who enjoy a rustic but comfortable setting.

Campground features include:

  • 28 campsites (tent and small RVs/trailers up to ~20–25 feet)
  • Fire rings and picnic tables at each site
  • Vault toilets and potable water
  • Sandy swimming beach with roped-off area
  • Day-use picnic area with grills and pavilion
  • Boat access for kayaks and canoes (non-motorized only)
  • Pet-friendly (on leash)
  • Quiet, family-friendly atmosphere

Sites are first-come, first-served, so early arrival is recommended, especially on weekends and during peak foliage season.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES & ACTIVITIES

Surrounded by Green Mountain National Forest, Hapgood Pond Campground is a fantastic basecamp for hiking, swimming, paddling, and wildlife watching. The pond itself is great for families and leisurely paddlers, while nearby trails offer more rugged options for hikers and explorers.

Things to do nearby include:

  • Swimming at the sandy beach area
  • Kayaking & canoeing on Hapgood Pond
  • Hiking on the Hapgood Pond Trail, Bromley Mountain, or Grout Pond
  • Fishing for trout and bass in the pond or nearby streams
  • Picnicking in the day-use area
  • Wildlife viewing — loons, ducks, deer, and more
  • Exploring nearby Manchester, VT, for shopping, dining, and cultural attractions

In fall, the forest blazes with color, making this a top destination for leaf-peepers seeking a quiet, nature-focused experience.
